Cabris
Cabris is an authentic Provençal village located at 560m above sea-level, offering some of the prettiest views of the western Alpes Maritimes and the neighbouring Var Region.
A VILLAGE PERCHED ABOVE THE TERRITORY OF GRASSE
Belvedere and ancient stones
Enjoy gentle strolls through the village’s narrow stepped lanes, lined with old grey brick houses.
Cabris has a rich religious architectural heritage evidenced by its 17th century church and four rural chapels positioned at the four corners of the village. A few traces of the feudal castle built in 997 remain, as well as some vestiges of its protective walls. From Esplanade Mirabeau you can enjoy expansive views of the Bay of Cannes, the Lérins Islands, the Gulf of Napoule, the Estérel Mountains and Lake St Cassien. This landscape, set slightly inland, also boasts many walking paths (via the GR51) and mountain bike trails.
OLIVE GROVES, WATER AND A PALM TREE – VILLAGE SYMBOLS
Nature and a water channel
Walking up towards Place Mirabeau, you will come across the village palm tree, apparently, one of the last surviving specimens of its kind planted at this altitude. Water, another symbol of the village, is celebrated every July to commemorate its arrival in the village in 1931 via a 20km canal. Until then, it had been the responsibility of the Rural Police Officer to distribute water by rationing which he hauled in large water barrels from Spéracédes village in his truck. In honour of this initiative, the large fountain in the middle of the village includes a bust of the mayor in office at the time.
A LITERARY SOUL
The shadow of The Little Prince and other illustrious visitors
Figurines of "The Little Prince" (Le Petit Prince) can be seen everywhere in Cabris, recalling that the Countess de Saint-Exupéry, mother of the writer and pioneering pilot, lived here for 40 years, between 1934 and 1971. André Gide, Albert Camus and Jean Marais either lived or enjoyed regular and extended stays in Cabris. No doubt the village’s tranquil peaceful way of life helped inspire their art.
