Discover the secrets of Paul Ricard
Embiez Island was nicknamed Ricard Island after its owner, who bought it in 1958 with the aim of creating a tourist destination that honours nature and respects the environment. No cars are allowed on the island. You will only see bicycles and a handful of electric vehicles. The first thing newcomers feel on arriving is Embiez’s striking tranquillity.
The island’s circumference is around 6km, so it is possible, even for children, to do a tour of the island on foot, or by bicycle. The whole route is signposted with information plaques that give details of the island’s plant-life and remind visitors of the need to protect nature. The archipelago is a Ligue de Protection des Oiseaux refuge (league for the protection of birds), so more observant visitors will be able to see cormorants, kingfishers and grey herons.
It takes between one to three hours to walk around Embiez Island, depending on your walking speed.
The Observatory Aquarium – children love it
Take your children for a little wander around the aquarium of the Paul Ricard Oceanographic Institute to help them learn about marine plant-life. The aquarium is packed with hundreds of species of Mediterranean animal and plant-life, and is a good place to teach children in a fun way about the importance of preserving the environment.
