Located on the outskirts of Mercantour National Park, this green resort takes on a Nordic feel during winter. Castérino health and relaxation resort, located in the Haute Roya area and surrounded by lakes and torrents, boasts a varied range of outdoor and high altitude activities.


Pedestrian walks through a prehistoric open air museum

Castérino (1600 m) in the direction of Valmasque (2549 m) you reach the Vallée des Merveilles, a 12km area packed with around 36,000 rock carvings. Overlooked by Mount Bego (2872 m) this archaeological treasure is available for unaccompanied or guided tours in approved 4x4s or on foot on a trek totalling 8 hours across managed paths that are particularly lovely towards the end of summer.


A high altitude course with sea views

On the outskirts of Tende pass, the mountain Vievola golf club offers a technical and varied 9-hole course and a training and practice centre that boasts ten play realistic workshops. Open from mid-April to the end of October, this golf club located 950m in altitude in the middle of the Roya Valley includes a friendly Club House and restaurant overflowing with local flavours and that is open every day.


Gastronomic family cooking and picnic packs for walkers

Nathalie and André Boulanger manage this auberge located 1800m in altitude, bursting with charm, located close to the start point of numerous walks. The welcoming atmosphere of this establishment is also manifest in the restaurant’s menu that includes a choice of flavour-packed mountain dishes and other more elegant delicacies. Picnic packs with drinks are also offered to walkers (€11) - the perfect start to a hike to the Vallée des Merveilles. Similarly, the Auberge also welcomes walkers on their way back for dinner or nights’ accommodation in the mountains.


Tree houses for nights in the mountains

On the road between Castérino and St Dalmas de Tende, Mercantour Monts & Merveilles, runs four tree houses that are totally equipped with kitchen, bathroom and heating, available for rent throughout the year. These cosy little nests hidden in a chestnut tree forest welcomes nature lovers for weekend or week hire for breaks perched right in a panoramic view of nature. Perfect for large families or breaks with friends, a communal platform links two communicating houses and the level access areas are safe and easy to walk on.
