The town of Le Cannet celebrates its joie de vivre, light and colour as exalted by the great painters, such as Côte d'Azur artist Théo Tobiasse, and celebrated by Emmanuel Bellini and Pierre Bonnard.
Town centre art works
A walking circuit to discover Old Cannet has been created around its historic centre. The route is traced out in blue and yellow markings on the ground and is accompanied by information plaques.
The most regularly visited highlight on the route is the old Town Hall (Hôtel des Anges), whose Wedding Hall includes five works by painter Emmanuel Bellini representing joie de vivre in Le Cannet.
The facade of one of Le Cannet's houses has been adorned with a fresco by Raymond Peynet, called “The Lovers' Wall”, an ode to newly married couples. In his work, a couple is shown flying over the Garden of Eden which resembles Le Cannet.
Restaurant terraces and open views
At the very top of rue St Sauveur, which runs through the old town, lies Le Cannet's only public square, Place Bellevue. In 1855, it was named Place "Mercier Lacombe" in recognition of the Prefect of Var's contribution of 1000 Francs towards its expansion. The square was renamed Place Bellevue in 1870.
Flanking the sides of this charming space in the middle of the old town are restaurant and café terraces providing unobstructed views of the Bay of Cannes and the Lérins Islands.
The Pierre Bonnard Museum
The first museum in the world dedicated to painter Pierre Bonnard was inaugurated on 25 June 2011.
The artist lived in Le Cannet in his house “Le Bosquet” from 1939 until his death in 1947. It was here that he painted his greatest works.
Until 25 September 2011, the museum's inaugural exhibition, “Bonnard and Le Cannet in the light of the Mediterranean” brings together approximately forty paintings and almost twenty works on paper around four main themes.
