1666 : Great Fire of LondonOn September 2, 1666, the house of King Charles II of England's baker burned completely. 1945 : Proclamation of Independence of VietnamOn September 2, 1945, hours after the official surrender of Japan, Ho Chi Minh proclaimed the independence of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam against France, in front of an enthusiastic crowd in Hanoi. The French occupied southern Vietnam and opened negotiations with North Vietnam representatives. Negotiations were well under way when French generals, among whom Valluy and Argenlieu, decided on a coup by bombing the port of Haiphong, on November 28, 1946. |

1973 : Death of J.R.R. TolkienOn September 2, 1973, the English writer J.R.R. Tolkien died at the age of 81. His novels The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy are part of world culture. Lord of the Rings was made into a film by director Peter Jackson from New Zealand with Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Viggo Mortensen, Ian McKellen, John Rhys-Davies, Orlando Bloom, Liv Tyler and Dominic Monaghan in the lead roles. The same Peter Jackson began the staging of The Hobbit in 2011. |
