1944 : Uprising of the Sonderkommandos at Auschwitz-Birkenau


On October 7, 1944, there was an uprising of the Sonderkommandos, the commandos of the crematoria of Auschwitz-Birkenau. They partly destroyed the crematorium and fought against the SS. As the camp did not rise up to support the revolt, the Sonderkommandos were mostly killed. Only a few survive the camps and could talk about the tasks assigned to them: shaving hair, recovery of gold teeth and jewelry on the body in the gas chambers, destruction of bodies in the ovens or on outdoor pyres...

1985 : An Italian ship hijacked by terrorists


On October 7, 1985, the Italian cruise ship, the Achille Lauro, was attacked by Palestinian terrorists of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (FLP), organization led by Abu Abbas. The hostage-takers fled to Libya by plane but it is intercepted by U.S. F-14 which forced it to land in Italy where the hostage-takers were judged.

2001 : Beginning of the intervention of the United States in Afghanistan


On October 7, 2001, the U.S. and the UK began their intervention in Afghanistan in response to the September 11 attacks: Operation Enduring Freedom. They were helped locally by the United Islamic Front or Northern Alliance, which had been led by Ahmad Shah Massoud until his assassination on 9 September 2001.
