1948 : Earthquake in Turkmenistan On October 6, 1948 at 8:12 p.m., an earthquake of magnitude 7.3 on the Richter scale hit the city of Ashgabat in Turkmenistan. The quake lasted only seven seconds but it was very destructive over a wide area. 30 villages were even destroyed in Iran. Numerous cracks streak Ashgabat and its surroundings and the infrastructure is severely damaged. 110,000 people are killed. The Soviet Union does not require any outside help, however.
1972 : A train derails in Mexico On October 6, 1972, a train derailed near the town of Saltillo in Mexico. 4 cars burst into flames. 208 people were killed and hundreds more were injured. The accident was due to very excessive speed. October 6 is a holiday in Mexico and the driver had celebrated the event with his colleagues. He was drunk at the time of the accident.
1976 : Massacre of students in Thailand On October 6 1976, student demonstrators at Thammasat University in Bangkok against the return from exile of the former dictator Thanom Kittikachorn were attacked by the police of the Thai military government. 46 students were massacred. The next day a more moderate military junta took power.
1981 : Anwar Sadat assassinated On October 6, 1981, Egyptian President Anwar Sadat was assassinated during a review of troops on the anniversary of the Yom Kippur War by members of the terrorist group Takfir Wal-Hajira. 10 others people were killed. Takfir Wal-Hajira was sponsored by Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. Anwar Sadat had incurred the hatred of Islamic extremists by negotiating peace accords with Israel.
