The free commune of Le Safranier

Did you know that there was a free commune or parish right at the heart of the old town of Antibes? It is generally known as the free commune/parish of Le Safranier which was founded during the sixties by a band of joyful and happy people from Antibes more than ready to perpetuate local traditions and party away through to the early hours!

Le Safranier is a pretty, flowery little corner of the old town of Antibes stretching from Tourraque Street through to Haut Castelet. The main square and particularly the restaurant called la Taverne du Safranier (the Safranier Tavern), where conviviality is always at its utmost, is basically the point where all the locals get together in addition to being both the departure and arrival place of all the various festivals that take place.

All year round, the latter are organised by the local people such as the May fêtes, the feast of the yule-log, that of the chestnut and even the traditional pistou soup of Angèle and the extremely popular National Ball of "square yard bowling" on the 14th July.
