Sospel
My friends are all huge fan of excursions, so one lazy summer day when I just wanted to go to the beach and relax, they convinced me to go to Sospel with them for a nice little day trip.
Sospel is a little village in the mountains, situated just next to Menton. It has about 3500 inhabitants. We went to Sospel by car from Nice, but you can take also take the train that runs between the Gare SNCF in Nice and Cuneo to Sospel. Another option is to take the train from Gare SNCF in Nice (towards the direction Ventimiglia) to Menton, and from there you take bus NR 15 to Sospel. The bus only costs 1,50 euro.
Sospel is a beautiful little village, with majestic old churches, fountains and narrow alleys. It is very calm and has a genuine atmosphere. If you are into backpacking, there are many good hiking trails in the area. Why not take a little walk and enjoy the alluring landscape? From here you can also continue to certain Italian villages, such as Olivetta and Airole. For those who are a bit adventurous, I propose a visit to the tourist office in Sospel, where you can find more information about the various sporting activities that you can do in the surrounding area, such as climbing and canyoning.
We arrived in Sospel just in time for lunch. We were quite hungry, and soon wefound a delightful restaurant with outdoor seating down by the river that runs trough the village. We sat down in the shadow, and a waiter immediately came to our service. I ordered lamb, which was delicious. The service was great, the lady who served us was incredibly nice. Although, she seemed a little bit shocked when we said we were not having wine for lunch. We had to explain to her that we could not drink alcohol since we were driving.
After lunch we took a stroll along the river side. It was really hot, so went down to the river to feel the water. Since we were wearing shorts we just had to take off our shoes, and dip our feet in the water, which actually was surprisingly cold! Then we took some photos of the charming, old bridge that crosses the river, before we finished this lovely little excursion by sitting down in a little cafe to have some lemonade before heading back to Nice.
