DESCRIPTION
Sollies-Pont is located on the heights of Hyeres and at 12km from Toulon. It's the administrative center of the township which includes the villages of La Farlède, Solliès-Ville, Sollies-Toucas and Belgentier.
Sollies-Pont is crossed by the river Gapeau, which allows it to irrigate farmland in the area.
HISTORY
The story of Sollies-Pont begins at the Gallo-Roman era and at the creation of Solliès-Ville. The city was born of the separation of territories of Solliès-Ville and Solliès-Le-Haut. The city overlooks the Gapeau valley and enjoys of a protection against the barbaric attacks, which enabled it to develop by itself. It's in 1480 that the territory which later became Sollies-Pont had been bought. The town got its independence in 1797.
The castle of Solliès-Pont received famous guests such as Charles IX, Catherine de Medici and Louis XIV. The castle was destroyed by fire and rebuilt in 1862.
In the nineteenth century, the city developed its agriculture to become today a city specialized in the production of chocolate, nougat, but also ceramic. Today the city is defined as the capital of the figue.
IMPORTANT PLACES
The activities proposed by the town of Solliès-Pont are very varied. Several historic buildings are open to the public:
- The Forbin castle dating from the XVI century, its park and pond,
- The Church of St. John the Baptist and its large organ built by Joseph Callinet in 1845 and listed historical monument,
- The Chapel of St. Christine overlooking the city,
Cultural events are held each year in Solliès-Pont:
- The Castle Festival (concerts, dance), held in July,
- The International Piano Festival "Music at the court"in August,
- The stamp and postcard show
ACCESS
By plane: The airport of Toulon/Hyères offers daily flights from Paris/Orly. Marseille airport is located about 100Km from Solliès-Pont.
By rail: The Sollies-Pont train station is directly connected to the station of Toulon.
By road: From Nice take the A8 motorway, then take exit A57 towards Le Luc/Toulon/Hyères. Take exit 7-Les Terrins to Sollies-Toucas.
From Marseille, take the A57 motorway towards Toulon, continue on the A50 then the A57 and exit at Exit 7-Les Terrins to Sollies-Toucas.
