Information on the cities of Côte d'Azur Le Cannet - Tourism Alpes Maritimes Côte d'Azur
Presentation
It would be wrong to believe that Le Cannet is only part of the suburb of Cannes. It has its own personality. Located just behind Cannes, the town of Le Cannet extends its sister to the north. The city is an example in terms of enhancement of heritage, it has been recently awarded the Regional Heritage Prize in addition to being classified as a flowery town and a tourist city. About its mild climate, we used to say : "spend a winter at Le Cannet is to live three spring in a year."

HISTORY

History of Le Cannet started when the Romans settled and developed the cultivation of olive trees on the seven hills that surround it.

Around the year one thousand, the people of Le Cannet made many donations (mainly arable land) to gain God's mercy. The monks of the Abbey of Lerins received much of them; therefore the history of the village would be linked to the abbey for a long time. Then the monks brought families from Italy because of labor shortage to exploit the land. From there, hamlets were built as well as the first chapel of the village, St. Catherine in 1560.

The people of Le Cannet asked to be independent from the city of Cannes in 1730, and were granted independence in 1777. Since then, the village has developed between Cannes and Mougins. It offers residents and visitors an exceptional living environment.

TO SEE

The most attractive area is the residential area of the Old Cannet. Similar to all the old southern towns, it consists of a maze of streets hiding some beautiful 1900-style villas surrounded by secret gardens, often quite large. Le Cannet offers many oasis sheltered from the noise and the pollution of the Coast. Even it does not benefit from the immediate vicinity of the sea, it is away from the bustle just engulfing invading Cannes during the festivals.

Several ancient monuments, which witnessed history of the city, can still be seen be visited in Le Cannet. We can visit the Sainte-Catherine church, dating from the XVIth century, as well as the Tour Des Calvys and the Tour des Danys both dating from the fifteenth century and which served as shelters and protection for the inhabitants of Le Cannet.

The Bellevue square, as its name suggests, offers an exceptional view over the bay of Cannes and the Lerins Islands. In the distance, one can guess Golfe Juan and Cap d'Antibes.

ACCESS

Le Cannet is located in the hills above the city of Cannes. It is reached by either the A8 or by the Nationale 7, Route Napoleon.

Le Cannet is also accessible by train through the Cannes train station, 3 km from there.
