Amsterdam's coffee shops

A veritable institution, the city boasts around three hundred coffee shops but they aren't always very friendly.

The brown cafés, equivalent to beer bars, cultivate a warm and festive atmosphere. The most famous are those in Leidseplein. The terraces of the Grands cafés of Rembradplein are the most pleasant places to have a drink on nice days.

CAFE KARPERSHOEK
This cafe dates back to 1606 and is the oldest in Amsterdam. A meeting place for sailors docking in the port, today, there is still sand on the floor as there was in the 17th century.

SUPPERCLUB
This club which has been exported worldwide is one of the city's coolest (there is also a water version: the Supperclub Cruise). The "Snow Room" is an entirely white lounge area with enormous beds and immaculate cushions. The "Black Bar" area has a bar and restaurant and reflects the city's lights with its very sombre decor. At the end of the night, the sound and atmosphere, supervised by a DJ, reaches fever pitch.

The city's hippest bar which it is very difficult to get into attracts lots of local celebrities (models, musicians and actors). After dinner, you can enter the underground night club from midnight (without queuing and for 10€). In the bar, you can enjoy sipping generous cocktails in one of the bar areas from 8pm.

JIMMY WOO
Without doubt the city's most popular discotheque providing a mix of hip hop and techno in a high-end setting in an Asiatic style. Between the walls covered with gold leaf, the area's ultra-contemporary design evokes the unexpected world of an opium den: lanterns, leather furniture, silk fabric and opium beds. The carefully-selected resident DJs work in dimmed lighting and the exclusive cocktail menu contributes to the unique identity of this venue which is popular with clubbers.
