1917 : Mata Hari sentenced to death


On July 25, 1917, Dutch dancer Margueretha Gertruida Zelle, better known under the name Mata Hari, is sentenced to death for spying for Germany by a French military court.

1943 : Mussolini removed from office


On July 25, 1943, the grand council of the Italian fascist government decided to remove Mussolini from office because of military reverses in Italy, the appointment of incompetents at the highest level of the state and the alienation of the Italian people. Mussolini was arrested later that day.

1978 : First test tube baby


On July 25, 1978, Lesley Brown gave birth by Caesarean section to Louise, the first test tube baby in the world, in Oldham, England. The procedure was developed by Doctors Patrick Steptoe and Robert Edwards.

1995 : Attack on the RER B


On July 25, 1995 in Paris, a gas cylinder exploded in the RER B at station Saint-Michel - Notre-Dame. 8 people were killed and 117 injured. The attack was claimed by the GIA (Armed Islamic Group) in Algeria.
The authors were identified as Khaled Boualem Bensaid and Kelkal.
Khaled Kelkal was shot by police on September 29, 1995 near Lyon when he tried to resist. Boualem Bensaid was arrested in November 1995.

2000 : Concorde crashes


On July 25, 2000, Air France Concorde jet crashed to the ground shortly after takeoff from the airport of CDG airport in Paris. Its 105 passengers and crew members as welle as four people on the ground were killed .
The investigation showed that the accident was caused by a piece of metal on the runway, which blew a tire whose fragments damaged an engine and the fuel tank causing a fire.
