1940 : Tacoma Narrows bridge collapsed


On November 7, 1940, the Tacoma Narrows suspension bridge in Washington state, measuring 1810m in length, collapsed after being distorted too violently due to winds of only 64km/h. It had been open to the public on July 1 of that year.

1944 : Franklin Delano Roosevelt elected to his fourth term


On November 7, 1944, Franklin Delano Roosevelt won the U.S. presidential elections for the 4th time, despite a declining health. After managing the crisis of the Great Depression of the 30s, he had then to run a country at war. He died shortly after the start of his fourth term in April 1945. In 1951, the U.S. Constitution was amended to limit the number of presidential terms to two. Previously, only the willingness of presidents to follow George Washington's example limited the number. Anyway, only Franklin Delano Roosevelt won more than two presidential elections.

1987 : Ben Ali replaced Bourguiba


On November 7, 1987, Tunisian Prime Minister Ben Ali made a coup without bloodshed to replace the President Habib Bourguiba who was declared incompetent for health reasons. He remained at his post until January 14, 2011, when violent protests in his country forced him to resign.

2000 : Hillary Rodham Clinton elected to the Senate


On November 7, 2000, Hillary Rodham Clinton, then First Lady of the United States, was elected to the Senate.

2007 : Shooting in a school in Finland


On November 7, 2007, a 18-year-old student opened fire in a high school in Jokela, Finland. He killed eight people before killing himself. He had no difficulty in obtaining an SIG Mosquito automatic pistol legally.
