1860 : Abraham Lincoln elected President of the United States


On November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected as the 16th President of the United States. With the division of the Democratic Party, he became the first Republican candidate to win the presidency. As they had threatened if the Republican nominee, a fervent supporter of the abolition of slavery, won the election, seven southern States immediately seceded and created the Confederate States of America in March 1861. The civil war was declared a month later, on April 12.

1917 : Bolshevik coup in Russia


On November 6, 1917, the Bolsheviks led by Vladimir Lenin launched a coup without bloodshed against the Provisional Government established at the abdication of the Czar in March of that year. 2005 : Tornado in Indiana


On November 6, 2005, a tornado struck the Evansville area in Indiana. Having touched down at 1:50 am at the border between Kentucky and Indiana, it devastated the area with winds up to 320km/h. 25 people were killed.
