Information on the cities of Côte d'Azur Coaraze - Tourism Alpes Maritimes Côte d'Azur
Presentation
Coaraze is a commune, located in the département of Alpes-Maritimes and the région Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, in Southeast France. Its inhabitants are called Coaraziens.
Coaraze is a small village in Nice hinterland, in the valley of the Paillon river. The closest city is Contes, 8 km away.
The village itself is built on a sandstone mount at the footstep of Mount Férion (1,414 meters or 4,660 feet high).
Erected as a baronnie in 1629, Coaraze has been under Spanish administration from 1744 to 1748. In the nineteenth century, the old trail is replaced by a road : the Coaraze-Nice travel takes 4 hours (for 25 kilometers).
It is one of the "most beautiful villages of France".
Coaraze is a perched village which has retained its medieval appearance, with narrow cobbled streets, many vaulted passageways and old stone houses. The village is remarkable for its exceptional collection of ceramic sundials by Jean Cocteau, Valentin, Douking, etc. There are also many artists and craftsmen in this village of sunshine working leather or pewter, or engraving.
