Histoire

Cavalaire has been inhabited since ancient times. Archaeological digs proved that there was some port activities at that time and also a little town. Other traces of life dating from the Gallo-Roman were also found near Cavalaire.

In the Middle Ages, a small village called "Cavalairo" or "Cavalaira" depended from the city of Gassin and belonged to the realm of Jean de Cossa, Baronnerie of Grimaud. The port which has very interesting characteristics could develop an important port activity during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. However, the port of Saint-Tropez , built in 1470, competed with it for maritime trade.

At the time of the French Revolution, Cavalaire remains attached to Gassin. The people then decided to ask to be independent. It was not until 1929 that they will get their independance.

The city was an important site during World War II as Allied forces landed on its beaches during the Provence landings, on the night of August 14, 1944.
