Information on the cities of Côte d'Azur Bargeme - Tourism Var Côte d'Azur
Protected by its castle, Bargème is a village in which we can see many relics of the past : two fortified gates, the castle ruins or the Watchtower.
HISTORY
The history of Bargème is very closely related to the family of Pontevès. They built a castle where they lived for many years. Although the history of the dynasty of Pontevès in Bargème was rather bloody (several members of the family were murdered there), they retained the castle until 2008.
In 2008, the castle was sold to the town of Bargème. It has become part of the municipal assets and provides historical and cultural heritage to the village.
TOURISM3>
- The castle of the Pontevès : Built before 1225, it was partially destroyed by the wars of religion. The castle is a large square opening on a courtyard. This is the inner castle which was the most destroyed during the various assaults it had to endure. Its outer walls were preserved thanks to the protection provided by their defensive elements.
- The church of St Nicolas : The church, in romanesque style, dates from the twelfth century. It is classified as historical monuments. Inside, there is a San Sebastian altarpiece carved in 1525 and an altarpiece with naive primitive painting created in 1571. Its internal architecture consists of a vaulted arch and a arch-shaped porch with extradossed voussoirs. The church was restored in the 1990s.
- The Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows : This chapel was built by the inhabitants of Bargème, to atone for the massacre they committed against members of the Pontevès family. The Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows is located on the forecourt of the castle and it is classified as historical monuments.
- The Saint Petronilla Chapel : This chapel is located outside the village, about 2 km. St. Petronilla is known to have long been taken for Saint-Pierre's favorite daughter. It was then considered the "eldest daughter of the Church." His worship lasted till the seventeenth century.
- The Saint-Laurent Chapel : This chapel is also located outside the village, about 2 km. It overlooks the hamlet of St. Lawrence.
- The Saint-Antoine Chapel: Classified as historical monuments, the Saint-Antoine Chapel is one of the oldest chapels in the department.
