1874 : Birth of Winston ChurchillOn November 30, 1874, Winston Churchill, a man with an incredibly busy life, was born. He began his adult life with a military career in India, Sudan and South Africa, before entering politics and starting a literary career. During World War I, he was part of government until the Dardanelles disaster. Then he led a battalion on the front in France before returning to the government. After a period when he was a bit left out, he was called back in 1939 as First Lord of the Admiralty, then Prime Minister in 1940. The British people had to stand alone against Nazi Germany and Churchill promised them that he would never surrender. He then succeeded to convince Roosevelt and Stalin to join him. The Conservative Party lost the elections at the end of the war, but Churchill became Prime Minister again in 1951 and remained so until 1955. He then remained in politics while engaged in his literary career and even won a Nobel Prize in Literature. |
