1955 : James Dean died in East of Eden


On September 30, 1955, American actor James Dean died in a car accident while driving his Porsche at high speeds on the road to Salinas, California, where the action of the film adapted from the novel by John Steinbeck, East of Eden, in which he had turned, took place. The other two films he had shot : Giant and Rebel Without a Cause, came out after his death. With his short but intense career and dramatic death, James Dean became an icon revered around the world.

1993 : Earthquake in India


September 30, 1993, an earthquake of magnitude 6.3 struck the city of Latur in southern India. Due to the time of the earthquake (early morning) and poorly constructed houses, 10,000 people were killed.

2004 : First pictures of a giant squid in its natural habitat


On September 30, 2004, Japanese researchers were able to take pictures of a giant squid (Architeuthis) operating in its natural habitat, 1,000 km south of Tokyo. A giant squid can measure up to 13 m long. The colossal squid (Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni) is estimated to be even bigger but no live large specimen has ever been seen alive.

2009 : Earthquake in Sumatra


On September 30, 2009, an earthquake of moment magnitude 6.7 occurred near the coast of Sumatra in Indonesia, 45 km from the city of Padang. 1115 people were killed and 135,000 homes destroyed.
