1879 : A bridge collapses with a train in ScotlandOn December 28, 1879, the Tay Rail Bridge linking Dundee to Wormit, more than 3 km long, collapsed during a violent storm, while a train was crossing it. Its construction had been completed less than two years earlier. All passengers (75 people) of the train were killed. The collapse was due to serious design flaws. |

1885 : Creation of the Indian National CongressOn 28 December 1885 was created the Indian National Congress party. At the beginning, it demanded economic reforms and a certain power in decisions concerning Indian policy. This is the party that organized the campaign of passive resistance led by Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. After the independence of India, it became and long remained the majority party in the country under the leadership of Nehru and his descendants. |

1908 : Earthquake in SicilyOn 28 December 1908, an earthquake of magnitude 7.2 on the Richter scale occured in Messina in Sicily. The city of Messina was destroyed and the city of Reggio, in Calabria, strongly affected. The earthquake and the tsunami which followed killed between 100,000 and 200,000 people. |
