1943 : Tehran Conference On November 28, 1943, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin met in Tehran to discuss strategies for victory in Europe and Asia. To the great annoyance of Churchill, Roosevelt found Stalin charming and did everything to accommodate him.
1979 : Plane crashes in Antarctica On November 28, 1979, a New Zealand DC10 carrying tourists for a ride over Antarctica crashed into Mount Erebus. The pilot descended to be below the clouds, but too low for where they were located: close to the volcano Erebus, 3794m. The 257 passengers and crew were killed.
1987 : Crash of a South African Boeing 747 in the Indian Ocean On November 28, 1987, South African Airways flight 295 crashed in the Indian Ocean, east of Mauritius. The 159 passengers and crew were killed. A fire had broken out in the baggage compartment. The investigation that followed, after most of the pieces of the aircraft were recovered from the bottom of the ocean, never discovered the origin of the fire.
1989 : End of the monopoly of the Communist Party in Czechoslovakia On November 28, 1989, due to numerous demonstrations in the country and unable to get any support from Soviet Union led by Gorbachev, the Czechoslovak Communist Party headed by Gustav Husak agreed to let the power and called for the organization of free elections for the following month. On December 29, 1989, Vaclav Havel was elected president.
