1066 : William the Conqueror landed on England


On September 28, 1066, while King Harold II of England was busy fighting against the Norwegian forces and those of his brother Tostig, who had views on the throne and attacked by Scotland, William the Conqueror landed on the English soil by Pevensey near Hastings in Sussex with 7000 men. After the battle of Hastings on October 14th during which King Harold II was killed, William the Conqueror took London and the throne of England by the end of the year.

1791 : Emancipation of the Jews in France


On September 28, 1791, France was the first country to emancipate its Jewish population. The Jews lived at that time in communities separated from the rest of the population and had limited rights. With emancipation, the Jews became full citizens. Throughout the 19th century, other European countries and the United States made more or less similar decisions. However, it was not until 1917 that Russia decided emancipation. In Germany, Jews lost all their rights again in 1933 before being physically eliminated.

1928 : Discovery of penicillin


On September 28, 1928, in his laboratory in London, the Scottish scientist Alexander Fleming discovered that a culture of staphylococci, left in a corner before he left on vacation, had been invaded by a blue-green mold that had produced a substance that prevented bacteria growth. He called this substance penicillin. This was later developed for human medicine by, among others, biochemists Howard Florey, Ernst Boris Chain and Norman Heatley.

1994 : Sinking of the Estonia


On September 28, 1994, a ferry making the connection between Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, and Stockholm in Sweden, the Estonia, capsized in a storm off the coast of Finland. Most ferry passengers found themselves trapped inside the ship while others died of hypothermia or drowned in freezing water. There were only 137 survivors of the 989 people on board.
