1944 : End of the siege of Leningrad


on January 27, 1944, after 872 days of siege by the German forces, the Red Army managed to break the blockade and expel the occupying forces from the city. This siege killed hundreds of thousands of people and destroyed a large number of buildings, houses, factories and monuments.
