1700 : 1700 Cascadia earthquake


On January 26, 1700, a major earthquake about 9 on the Richter scale occured on the Cascadia subduction zone in western Canada. It caused a major tsunami in Japan and destroyed the whole region, sparsely populated at the time (and very crowded now).

The Gujarat earthquake of 2001 is the most devastating of India. It occurred 20km from the city of Bhuj in Gujarat State. It is an intraplate earthquake caused by the collision of two tectonic plates.
19,727 people were killed and 166,000 injured.
