1943 : Operation Gomorrah On July 24, 1943, the Allies launched Operation Gomorrah, a bombing mission on the city of Hamburg. For 7 days, the bombers dropped their bombs on the town which was almost completely destroyed. More than 42,000 people were killed. The city had many arms factories and refineries.
1969 : Apollo 11 back to earth On July 24, 1969, four days after the first steps of its astronauts on the moon, the Apollo 11 spacecraft returned safely on earth, in the Pacific Ocean. The crew of three astronauts was safe. Thus, the dream of President Kennedy was achieved. He had said in 1961: I believe this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to Earth.
2005 : Lance Armstrong won his seventh Tour de Franc On July 24, 2005, Lance Armstrong won his seventh Tour de France after a final stage on the Champs Elysees. He had won his first Tour in 1999. He then won the next 6 Tours. He had been diagnosed with testicular cancer at an advanced stage, though, in 1996. After a long treatment, he had returned to competition only in 1998. Since his retirement, Armstrong has been taking care of his foundation which support people living with cancer.
