1556 : Earthquake in Shaanxi On January 23, 1556, an earthquake occured in Shaanxi. It caused huge damage in different provinces. Approximately 830 000 people were killed. This is the deadliest earthquake in human history.
1849 : Elizabeth Blackwell On January 23, 1849, Elizabeth Blackwell became the first woman to graduate in medicine in the United States.
1997 : Madeleine Albright On January 23, 1997, Madeleine Albright became the first woman Secretary of State of the United States.
2003 : Pioneer 10 On January 23, 2003, the last tenuous signal from Pioneer 10 is received when the probe is 12 billion kilometers from earth. The probe was launched on March 2, 1972 by NASA to study Jupiter and interstellar space.
