1792 : Abolition of the monarchy in France


On September 21, 1792, the Legislative Assembly voted to abolish the monarchy.
King had been arrested on Aug. 10.
The First Republic began on September 22 and ended in 1804.

1938 : Hurricane in New England


On September 21, 1938, a Category 3 hurricane hit the coast of New England, with winds exceeding 120 mph. 700 people were killed. Damage totaled 18 billion in today's dollars. This was the most destructive storm of the twentieth century in the region. As there were more than a century that a hurricane had hit the area, no one expected the storm to move that far in the north and no warning had been given.

1999 : Earthquake in Taiwan


On September 21, 1999, an earthquake of magnitude 7.6 hit the island of Taiwan. 2400 people were killed and the damage amounted to several billion dollars. Damage were accentuated by numerous aftershocks.

2001 : Explosion at the AZF factory in Toulouse


On September 21, 2001, tons of ammonium nitrate exploded in the AZF factory in Toulouse. 31 people were killed and 2,500 others injured. The detonation was heard 80 km away. Several nearby buildings were also destroyed and many others were damaged. The causes of the accident are unknown.
