1558 : Beginning of the reign of Elizabeth I


On November 17, 1558, at the death of her half-sister Mary, Elizabeth, daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, became Queen of England. She remained queen until her death in 1603. Her reign was marked by religious divisions and conflicts with Catholic countries but also by the beginning of the domination of the English fleet and great explorations.

1796 : End of the Battle of Arcole


On November 17, 1796, the French revolutionary forces led by Napoleon Bonaparte defeated the Austrians at Arcole, near Verona in Italy.

1869 : Opening of the Suez Canal


On November 17, 1869, the Suez Canal, linking the Mediterranean to the Red Sea was opened for traffic. Built by Ferdinand de Lesseps, thousands of forced laborers and European workers with steam machines, it was initially not very wide or very deep. Expansion work were undertaken from 1876 and the channel became a major shipping route.

1997 : Luxor massacre


On November 17, 1997, an attack with automatic weapons was perpetrated by the Islamist organization Al-Gama'a al-Islamiyya on the archaeological site of Deir el-Bahri, outside the temple of Hatshepsut, near Luxor, on the other side of the Nile. 62 people were killed, mostly foreign tourists.
