1851 : Moby-Dick published


On November 14, 1851, Herman Melville's novel Moby-Dick is published in New York. It had been published under another title a month earlier in London. The book was a commercial failure. The Adventures of Captain Ahab in search of the white whale Moby-Dick became famous only by the 1920s. The book is now a classic of American literature.

1940 : Bombing of Coventry


On November 14, 1940, 500 German bombers attacked the English city of Coventry. 60,000 buildings were destroyed by 150,000 incendiary bombs and 500 tons of explosives. Hundreds of people were killed.

1969 : Apollo 12 took off


On November 14, 1969, Apollo 12 took off from Cape Canaveral in Florida with astronauts Charles Conrad, Richard Gordon and Alan Bean aboard. 5 days later, its lunar module landed on the Moon and Conrad and Bean were the third and fourth men to walk on the Moon.

1982 : Lech Walesa released


On November 14, 1982, following a public outcry in Poland and in the international community, Polish union leader Lech Walesa was released by the authorities after 11 months of internment. He was greeted by a cheering crowd. He received the Peace Nobel Prize in 1983, however, his union remained illegal until 1989.

1994 : First digital camera


On 14 November 1994, Casio introduced the first digital camera. The camera has a LCD screen and displays the photos in real time and saves them in a memory card.
