1938 : Barber's Adagio for Strings Barber for the first time on radio


On November 5, 1938, the adagio for strings of the young American composer Samuel Barber was heard for the first time on NBC radio. The piece of music was played by the NBC Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Arturo Toscanini, and become one of the most famous canon in the world. It was used in many films such as Platoon from Oliver Stone or The Elephant Man from David Lynch.

1940 : Roosevelt re-elected for a third term


On November 5, 1940, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was reelected for a third term as President of the United States. It was the first time that the two-term tradition is broken. During his campaign, he promised the American people that the U.S. would remain neutral. However, he had to change his position after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

1968 : Nixon elected president


On November 5, 1968, Republican Richard Nixon defeated Vice President Hubert Humphrey in the U.S. presidential election with less than 500,000 votes ahead. He had promised peace with honor for the conflict in Vietnam. However, the Americans withdrew from Vietnam only in 1973.

1991 : Floods in the Philippines


On November 5, 1991, severe floods were the result of torrential rain brought by Tropical Storm Thelma in the Philippines. 3000 people were killed, washed away or buried in mudslides. The Philippines had already been severely affected by the eruption of the volcano Pinatubo in June of that year.
