1864 : Cyclone in Calcutta


On October 5, 1864, a cyclone hit the city of Calcutta in India. 60,000 people were killed and 160 British ships were destroyed. Several English insurance companies went bust when the claims of the owners came in.

1947 : First televised address


On October 5, 1947, U.S. President Harry Truman addressed the American people for the first time through television.

1988 : Pinochet loses plebiscite


On October 5, 1988, the Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet lost its plebiscite asking his hold on power against the center-left coalition, Concertación. Elections were held the following year.

1999 : Train crash near London


On October 5, 1999, two trains collided at Ladbroke Grove junction, near Paddington Station in London. 31 people were killed and 520 others were injured. One of the drivers who had just received his training, had passed a red signal. The survey also revealed that the signs were often not visible enough.

2000 : Bulldozer Revolution


On October 5, 2000, thousands of demonstrators gathered in Belgrade, the capital of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, to protest against the regime of Slobodan Milošević and the disputed presidential elections of 24 September. The parliament was partially burned and Yugoslav television was taken by the protesters. One protester charged the TV building with a wheel loader and then the revolution was dubbed the Bulldozer Revolution. Under pressure, Milošević resigned on October 7. He was arrested in April 2001 to be prosecuted by the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia.
