1877 : Crazy Horse killed On September 5, 1877, the Sioux chief Crazy Horse was killed by soldiers at Fort Robinson, Nebraska, where he was sent after he surrendered to General George Crook, at the Indian Agency of Nebraska. Crazy Horse was a member of the Sioux chiefs who had defeated Colonel Custer at Little Big Horn in 1876.
1914 : Beginning of the Battle of the Marne On September 5, 1914, the 6th French Army, under the leadership of General Maunoury, launched a counter-offensive to stop the advance of the German army, arrived close to Paris. 4 days later, the second German army was forced to retreat, followed 2 days later by the rest of the German army. This was the first Allied victory in World War I. In six days of fighting in which took part 2 million men, 100,000 soldiers lost their lives.
1972 : Massacre at Munich Olympics On September 5, 1972, Black September Palestinian terrorists took nine Israeli athletes into hostage after killing two others, in the Olympic Village in Munich. They demanded the release of Arab prisoners held in Israel. The intervention of the German police resulted in the deaths of the nine hostages, five terrorists and one policeman. The Olympic Games were suspended for 24h in honor of the slain athletes.
1986 : Hijacking of Pan Am Flight 73 On September 5, 1986, Pan Am flight 73 from Bombay to New York via Frankfurt was hijacked by members of the Abu Nidal group at the Karachi airport, Pakistan. As a result of gunfire from the hijackers, the Pakistan Army's Special Service Group intervened. 20 passengers were killed and 150 were wounded.
