1870 : Fire in Constantinople


On June 5, 1870, a fire broke out in a quarter of Constantinople (now Istanbul). Because of high winds, the fire spread rapidly and destroyed 3,000 homes and killed 900 people.

1947 : Marshall seeks help for Europe


On June 5, 1947, the Secretary of State George Marshall gave a speech at Harvard University, asking that the U.S. provide substantial assistance for reconstruction of Europe. The assistance provided was called the Marshall Plan by journalists and many countries in Western Europe could benefit from it.

1967 : Beginning of the Six-Day War


June 5, 1967 is the beginning of the war of six days. Israel launched a simultaneous attack against Syria and Egypt. After six days, Israel took possession of the Golan Heights, the Sinai Peninsula , Gaza Strip, East Jerusalem and the West Bank. Within days, Israel had doubled its size.

1968 : Assassination of Robert Kennedy


On June 5, 1968, Senator Bobby Kennedy, campaigning for the Democratic nomination for president, in the United States, receives gunshots at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles from the Palestinian Sirhan Sirhan. He died of his wounds the next day. Kennedy had just won the Democratic primary in California and was to receive the Democrat nomination to face Richard Nixon during the presidential election of late 1968.
The killer justified his actions by saying he felt betrayed by Kennedy's support to Israel during the Six-Day War, a year ago.

2004 : Jennifer Lopez married Marc Anthony


On June 5, 2004, singer and actress Jennifer Lopez married singer Marc Anthony at a private ceremony at her home in Los Angeles. It was her third marriage. She will recognize publicly the wedding only in February 2005.
