1940 : Surrender of Belgium


On 28 May 1940, the Belgian army which was not able to contain the German invasion, the king of the Belgians Leopold III accepted the unconditional surrender of his country. The king refused to flee the country and stayed in custody in his palace until the end of the war.

1961 : The Forgotten Prisoners


On May 28 1961, the lawyer Peter Benenson published a n Appeal for Amnesty called "The Forgotten Prisoners" in a London newspaper demanding the release of political prisoners who expressed their views peacefully around the world. The article was reprinted in many newspapers around the world and many people gave their support to this campaign.
Delegates from several countries decided to create a movement to defend the freedom of expression which became the organization Amnesty International.

1965 : Explosion in a mine in India


On 28 May 1965, an explosion due to methane killed 375 people and injured hundreds other people in a mine near Dharbad in India. The explosion was so violent that victims were not only counted among the miners inside the mine but also among people who were standing outside the mine entrance.

1977 : Fire in a night club in Kentucky


On May 28, 1977, a fire broke out at the Beverly Hills Supper Club in Southgate, Kentucky. 165 people were killed and hundreds injured because of very poor safety equipments.

1987 : A German plane landed on Red Square


On May 28, 1987, a young German, Mathias Rust landed his plane in the Red Square without having been intercepted during its journey from Helsinki to Moscow.

Republic Day in Armenia and in Azerbaijan
On 28 May, we celebrate the independence in Armenia and in Azerbaijan gained on May 28, 1918 after the peace agreement between the Ottoman Empire and the Soviet Union and the creation of the Federal Democratic Republic of Transcaucasia between Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia (which lasted three months).
The independence of Azerbaijan lasted only until 1920 when it was incorporated into the Soviet Union.
Derg Downfall Day in Ethiopia
May 28 is National Day of Ethiopia, which commemorates the fall of the Derg in 1991. The Derg was the military junta that ruled the country with an iron fist from 1974 to 1991: arrests and executions of opposition figures, civil war, famine (which caused 1 million deaths).
