1895 : Oscar Wilde sentenced to hard labor


On 25 May 1895, the English writer Oscar Wilde was sentenced to two years hard labor for his homosexuality by a London court. He chose to defend himself in court rather than flee justice. He went into exile in France at the end of his sentence.

1925 : Convicted for teaching the theory of evolution


On May 25, 1925, John T. Scopes, a science teacher in a high school was condemned by the State of Tennessee for having taught the theory of evolution to his students. The trial was a national sensation and all the newspapers of major cities in the north ridiculed Tennessee's creationists.

1935 : Jesse Owens beats three world records in one hour
