1883 : Opening of the Brooklyn Bridge


On 24 May 1883, the Brooklyn Bridge, linking Manhattan to Brooklyn was open to traffic. 13 years had been needed for its construction. Upon its opening, it was the largest suspension bridge in the world.

1941 : HMS Hood sunk by Bismarck


On May 24 1941, the pride of the British fleet and its largest cruiser, HMS Hood, was sunk by the most modern German battleships, the Bismarck, in the North East of Iceland. All the crew members of the ship were killed, except 3 of them. The Bismarck was torpedoed and sunk by the British fleet three days later.

1943 : Josef Mengele arrives at Auschwitz


On May 24, 1943, Dr. Josef Mengele arrived at the extermination camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. He was first assigned to the Gypsy camp before joining the camp, when this camp was liquidated, the main infirmary in Birkenau. During his stay, he practiced the most horrible experiences on prisoners and selected, according to his own pleasure, thousands of people for the gas chamber. Despite a manhunt, he escaped any punishment after the war and never showed any remorse for his actions.

1964 : 320 died at a football match


On 24 May 1964, at the end of a Peru-Argentina soccer match, qualifying for the Olympics, a goal disallowed by the referee caused a riot followed by a panic. 320 people died suffocated or crushed and more than 800 others were injured.

Independence Day in Ecuador
