1950 : Fangio won the Monaco Grand Prix


On 21 May 1950, the Argentine driver Juan Manuel Fangio, won his first Grand Prix at Monaco Grand Prix, with his Alfa Romeo. In his career, he won 24 Grands Prix and was 5 times World Champion.

1980 : Battle of San Carlos


On May 21, 1982, during the Falklands War, the British launched a commando landing operation on the soil of the Falklands Islands. In response to this, the Argentine forces attacked intensively the British ships causing serious damage. Nevertheless, the British operation was a success.

1991 : Rajiv Gandhi assassinated


On May 21, 1991, former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by a female suicide bomber while he was campaigning in the state of Tamil Nadu.

2003 : Earthquake in Algeria


On May 21, 2003, an earthquake of magnitude 6.7 on the Richter scale hit Algeria. The epicenter was located offshore, 60 km north-east of Algiers.
The damage was enormous and 2278 people were killed and over 10,000 others injured.
