1717 : Voltaire imprisoned in the Bastille On May 16, 1717, because of his sarcastic criticism on politics and religion, Voltaire was imprisoned in the Bastille. He stayed there one year. On his release, he continued his critics and had to flee France several times to avoid returning to jail.
1929 : First Academy Awards ceremony On 16 May 1929, the first awards of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, awarding the film industry, took place at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood. Until 1942, the winners were known before the ceremony. The awards were renamed Oscars in 1939, apparently by the Director of the Academy, Margaret Herrick, who might have found a resemblance between the statuettes and her uncle Oscar. The gold-plated statuette was designed by MGM art director Cedric Gibbons, the model was the Mexican actor Emilio Fernandez (El Indio) and the original sculptor of the statue, George Stanley.
1943 : End of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising On 16 May 1943, the uprising of the Warsaw Jewish Ghetto ended when units of the Wehrmacht and SS, armed with tanks and armored vehicles regained control of the ghetto after a month of fighting.
1965 : Accident at Bien Hoa On 16 May 1965, the accidental explosion of a bomb killed 31 people and injured 95 others in the Bien Hoa U.S. air base n Vietnam. 40 American and South Vietnamese planes were also destroyed.
