1955 : Signing of the Warsaw Pact


On 14 May 1955, the Soviet Union and its allies in the Eastern bloc (East Germany, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria and Albania) signed the Warsaw Pact, a security pact also providing economic integration, in the Polish capital.

1964 : First stage of the Aswan Dam


On 14 May 1964, Egyptian President Nasser asked Nikita Khrushchev, the Soviet leader, to cut the ribbon giving the start of the diversion of the Nile, to allow the construction of the Aswan Dam.
The Aswan Dam was financed largely by the Soviet Union and many Russian workers participated in its construction.
The dam was opened in 1971.

1973 : Skylab


On May 14, 1973, the U.S. launched their space station Skylab in orbit around the earth. The Soviets had launched their own space station, Salyut 1, in 1971.

1991 : Winnie Mandela sentenced to jail


On May 14, 1991, in South Africa, Winnie Mandela was sentenced to six years in prison for complicity in kidnapping and assault against four young people, abducted in a Methodist mission in Soweto, a township near Johannesburg. The perpetrators were the bodyguards of Winnie Mandela, members of the Mandela United Football Club, who gave rise to terror in Soweto, abusively using the name of Mandela. One of the victims, Stompie Seipei, died of his injuries.
The sentence was suspended on appeal.
