1664 : From New Amsterdam to New York


On September 8, 1664, the Dutch governor of New Amsterdam, the capital of New Holland, surrendered to the British who renamed the city New York.
Legend has it that the Dutch bought Manhattan for $24 to an Algonquian tribe. New York became later the first capital of the United States.

1941 : Beginning of the siege of Leningrad


On September 8, 1941, the Germans began the siege of Leningrad, the second largest city in the Soviet Union. It lasted 872 days during which one million Soviet civilians and soldiers died of hunger and cold.
The only access allowed a tenuous supply, very inadequate for the population. After eating plants, animals, leather and wallpaper, people ate their dead.
The Red Army broke through the German lines in January 1943 but the Germans retreated only at the beginning of 1944.

1974 : Pardon for Nixon


On September 8, 1974, one month after becoming President of the United States, following the resignation of President Nixon because of the Watergate scandal, Gerald Ford pardoned Nixon for any crimes he committed while he was in office. This pardon was not well accepted by the population.
Ford had become Nixon's Vice President when Spiro Agnew, who was prosecuted for tax evasion and corruption, resigned.

2001 : The Williams sisters in the final of the US Open


On September 8, 2001, the Williams sisters met in the final of the US Open Tennis. Venus beat Serena 6-2, 6-4. The following year, Serena beat Venus when they met again in the US open.

September 8 is International Literacy Day. The day was decided by the UNESCO in 1965 to promote the importance of literacy in the world. Today, 20% of adults are illiterate and two thirds of them are women.
Independance Day in Macedonia
September 8 is the Independence Day in Macedonia, which commemorates its independence from Yugoslavia, declared on September 8, 1991 and accepted on 8 April 1993.
