1902 : Mount Pelee destroyed the city of St. Pierre


On May 8, 1902, after several weeks of eruptions and earthquakes, Mount Pelee, stratovolcano on the island of Martinique, exploded into a huge cloud of ash and horizontal pyroclastic flow descends to the town of St. Pierre that it is joined and disappear in minutes. 30,000 people were killed.

1945 : Victory in Europe


On May 8, 1945, U.S. President Truman and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill announced victory in Europe and celebrate the capitulation of Germany. A huge crowd celebrated the return of peace, especially in England.
