1902 : Mount Pelee destroyed the city of St. Pierre


On May 8, 1902, after several weeks of eruptions and earthquakes, Mount Pelee, stratovolcano on the island of Martinique, exploded into a huge cloud of ash and horizontal pyroclastic flow descends to the town of St. Pierre that it is joined and disappear in minutes. 30,000 people were killed.

1945 : Victory in Europe


On May 8, 1945, U.S. President Truman and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill announced victory in Europe and celebrate the capitulation of Germany. A huge crowd celebrated the return of peace, especially in England.

1945 : An demonstration celebrating the victory degenerates into massacres in Algeria


On May 8, 1945 in Algiers, the demonstration celebrating the victory over Germany was used by nationalists chanting slogans. Police on the orders of General de Gaulle, brutally repressed the demonstrators that brought a murderous violence of the rioters against Europeans.
The French army and local militias retaliated in a terrifying way and thousands of Algerian civilians were killed in horrific conditions.

1984 : USSR boycotted Los Angeles Olympics


On May 8, 1984, the USSR announced it is boycotting the Olympics in Los Angeles, ostensibly for security reasons and the overmarketing of the games. The countries of the Eastern bloc did likewise. This was actually the answer to boycott of the Moscow Olympics by the Americans in 1980.
