1709 : Alexander Selkirk rescued


On February 1st, 1709, after four years spent alone on the island of Juan Fernandez off the coast of Chile, Alexander Selkirk was rescued by a privateering ship piloted by the buccaneer William Dampier. Alexander Selkirk inspired Daniel Defoe's novel Robinson Crusoe.

1793 : France declared war on England and Holland


On 1 February 1793, revolutionary France declared war on Great Britain and Holland. After some setbacks, the Army of the Republic, strengthened and reorganized, turned back the invaders.

1814 : Eruption of the Mayon Volcano


On 1 February 1814, in the province of Albay in the Philippines, an eruption of the Mayon volcano occured, killing 2200 people. The Mayon Volcano is a stratovolcano, cone shaped and almost perfectly symmetrical.

1978 : Roman Polanski fled the United States


On February 1, 1978, Roman Polanski skipped bail and fled to France after pleading guilty to charges of having sex with a 13-year-old girl.

2003 : Explosion of the Space Shuttle Columbia


On 1 February 2003, the Space Shuttle Columbia was disintegrated during its reentry in the Earth's atmosphere, killing its seven crew members. The thermal protection system of the shuttle was damaged by a piece of insulating foam dislodged during takeoff.
